Mr. Nguyễn Minh Tiến is pursuing a master's degree in Theatre and Dance, with a concentration in Performance Studies, at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and in history at the University of Edinburgh. He previously earned his bachelor’s degrees in art and media studies and literature at Fulbright University Viet Nam and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, respectively. He’s currently working on multiple book-translating and multimedia projects to expand the fields of youth culture and hip-hop studies in Vietnam, inspired by his on-site, lively experiences with the local hip-hop communities in the vibrant city of Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). His most recent article includes an editorial essay on COLORSxStudio. He is currently working on his master’s thesis which explores the identity and performance in time and space of some hip-hop creative expatriates living in Ho Chi Minh City.

Tiến aims to become a research-based artist and creates critically engaged art projects that best represent his current interdisciplinary research interests in modern and contemporary art, post-colonial and globalized youth identities, modern and folk Vietnamese music, and fashion studies. His most recent creative artworks include Illuminating Dislocations , somnitores, and Đây là Việt Rap?.      

Tiến is the recipient of the prestigious East-West Center Graduate Degree Fellowship (cohort 2024) that funded his studies at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. He was recently awarded the John Young Scholarship Endowment Fund for the Spring 2025 semester. Previously, Tiến won the second prize in the field of social sciences and humanities at the 22nd Eureka Student Research Competition for his paper titled “The Folk Characteristics in Vietnamese Rap, Period 2010–2020.” 

While not working or studying, Tiến enjoys listening to music, reading, watching movies, and riding his scooter through the streets of urban Saigon.
